Emmanuel Salami

Emmanuel Salami specialises in data regulation with a focus on (big) data privacy, data protection and intellectual property law in relation to (emerging) technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI). Emmanuel also researches about sustainability and the circular economy including the impact of technology and big data on the environment. Furthermore, his research focuses on  Global North vs Global South perspectives as they impact on his areas of expertise. Emmanuel has published articles in his areas of specialisation which have been featured in various media including international peer reviewed journals. 

His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in law from Nigeria (LLB), a Masters degree in Information Technology and Intellectual Property law (LLM) from Germany, and a PhD focussing on data protection and intellectual property in relation to AI obtained from Finland. This diverse academic background ensures Emmanuel is able to research across broad spectra.  Emmanuel is a researcher and part-time teacher at the University of Lapland. As part of the ENACT project (see below), he designed a course titled the “Legal and ethical aspects of smart and green transport systems” which is currently taught to postgraduate students in Finland.

Emmanuel has been part of various research projects including:

1. Bio-oils based polymeric composites; value chain from synthesis to additive manufacturing

2. Education network for automated and connected transport for sustainable cities (ENACT)

3. ValueBioMat: Bio-oils based polymeric composites; value chain from syntheisis to additive manufacturing

4. Copyright issues related to the development of AI based digital services

Outside the academia, Emmanuel works as a privacy pro having held various privacy positions for multinationals across the EU
